Social Network Updates June 2017
A lot happened in the world of Social Media in June 2017. Here’s a rundown of the top stories, updates and events from the world’s social networks.
The ever popular video and picture app released their all new ‘SnapMap’ on 21st June, to a very mixed bag of reviews. The update allows users to activate their location settings for friends to see where they are in the world, in realtime. The new, somewhat stalky feature even allows friends to see whether you are eating, sleeping, driving or flying in an airplane.
The mega app’s main consumer base are teenagers and young adults, so this major update is understandably causing a lot of concern over safety with parents and carers.

Facebook hits 2 billion users!
We all know that almost everyone has a Facebook account, but did you ever stop and wonder how big that number really was? Well, the social networking site have just announced that there are 2 billion of us to be exact! As of this month, they are currently the top social networking site worldwide, with YouTube at second place with 1 billion users and Instagram in third with 700 million users. Mark Zuckerberg shared a delighted announcement message reading:“As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people! We're making progress connecting the world, and now let's bring the world closer together. It's an honor to be on this journey with you.”
The social media network launched 13 years ago and since then has seen their monthly users climb at a ridiculously fast rate, with only 1 billion users 5 years ago. With around 20 million new users per month, we could see them hitting 2.1 billion by the end of this year!
If you’re avid Twitter users like we are, then you probably saw the brand new redesign that Twitter rolled out last month. Basing their new and updated look on their iOS and Android apps, the look feels lighter, faster and a lot more user friendly. Here’s a few of the improvements and added functionalities:
Font redesign including clearer, bolder section headlines
A new profile section on the iOS app
Speech bubbles for replies to tweets
Real-time live updates on tweets and like counts
Full screen tweets and pictures when opened
Circular profile pictures
Small changes to like and retweet icons

Instagram’s Archive and Live Streaming Updates
On 13th June, Instagram released their new update, ‘Archive’ to the world. The new feature allows users to simply hide old photographs from their timeline without permanently deleting them. The archived posts stay in a separate folder that only the user can see, allowing them to re add the post at a later date if they wish to do so. One of the benefits to this new roll out is, the likes you already have on a photo will stay there and show again should you decide to re post.
Another new feature of Instagram’s is the ability to save your live stories, once they have ended, to your timeline for 24 hours. This update has received great reviews so far, allowing people to keep in touch with what their friends, or favourite celebrities are doing throughout the day without worrying about missing out - #FOMO!
